CAIRNS FESTIVAL 2025 || Turtle Making Workshop

Learn how to create a small turtle using ghost nets, the discarded fishing nets that pose a major threat to marine life and reefs. This hands-on workshop introduces a simple stitching technique while exploring the environmental impact of marine debris.

Participants will walk away with new skills in recycled craft and a deeper understanding of the importance of ocean conservation. Suitable for all skill levels.

About Jimi Thaiday
Jimi was born in Cairns and grew up on Erub (Darnley Island) in the Eastern Torres Strait, part of the Peiudu Tribe, one of the four tribes of Erub.

The inspiration for his art is from his Indigenous heritage, livelihood and the environment in which he grew up in. His cultural traditions and knowledge has been taught and passed on through generations, influencing his practice and encouraged by his family giving him confidence and motivation to keep developing his ideas and techniques.
